To be honest, I did not enjoy reading until I was an adult. I think the first book I read for pure pleasure was the Great Gatsby or Beloved, two amazing books. I know read about 100 books a year.
I understand what you are saying about growing up poor. That is how my parents grew up. They were doing better than everyone around them so that was their reference point, but now they know.
Yet, they were happy and loved. I think the internet has a lot to do with people not being content because of perfectly curated images of people flaunting a lifestyle they did not earn or create to obtain it.
I think that is going to be the real problem with each generation that comes after us.
