The slaveowners even knew how damaging it was, President Jefferson, a whole r@p!$+ and slaveowner, declared that slavery was "a moral depravity" and a "hideous blot." They knew what they were doing was wrong. Just like large companies that pollute our water, know what they are doing is wrong, but the money and perhaps the cruetly were both too addicting to stop.
