“I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller. I wish I had a girl who looked good, I would call her.” I Wish by Skee-Lo

I am a short black man. I am five foot four. Yet, in my diminutive state, I still tower over Tory Lanez’s five foot two black @ss. Like Tory, I, too, had lovers who had to bend down to give me a kiss. Like him, I, too, know what it is like to walk down the street, holding your paramour’s hand, and see people gawk, double-take, snicker, and grin in disbelief. In our society, short men are not supposed to entangle with taller women.

Women are conditioned to lust after the tall ain't $hit men and to curb short men who would be the man of their dreams if he was a couple of inches taller. To be fair, in our society, men are taught to ridicule women who are too chaste or not chaste at all, who have the slightest skin blemish, or whose body does not fall within a tight range. To be a woman in this world is to know what it means to be Goldilocks. A woman is chided for being too aggressive and is bemoaned for not being assertive enough. A woman’s sense of humor is measured not by how funny she is but by how rapturously she laughs at a man’s jokes. Girls have so much trash dumped on them by a violent society that does not care or prioritize their well-being. I am in no way comparing the plight of us lilliputians to the misogyny that is hardwired in our culture.
