I went to college in rural Iowa. In small towns that were so homogenous, religion became what people used to divide white people from each other. I am not talking about Christians from Jews or even Catholics from Protestants but various Lutheran sects. Kids were not allowed to be friends with each other because they were one type of Lutheran or Baptist.

I was fascinated when my roommate told me that story. It stuck with me and your note made me think of that.
