I know I have to let go of the respectability politics contained in this mindset.

Yet, those respectability politics created the advances for black people that I now enjoy and benefit from.

Dressing neatly in suits were away for black folk to appear less different to white people in the hope they would listen and or not commit violence against them. It is why black folk still put on suits or Sunday clothes when they seek a loan.

This is also something that is very nuanced which we need to address.
